Today's vehicles use computers and hundreds of sensors to manage the engine, transmission, anti-lock brakes, traction control, airbags, climate systems and more. When one of those systems detects a malfunction, it can turn on a warning light and store a diagnostic trouble code.
The code identifies the system or circuit where the computer noticed a problem. It rarely identifies the exact failed part.
Reading the code is only the beginning.
A complete diagnosis can include testing sensor outputs, verifying wiring and power, checking commands going to operating devices and confirming that those devices do what the computer expects. That process is how a technician separates a failed part from a wiring fault, mechanical issue or misleading symptom.
A flashing check-engine light?
A flashing light can indicate a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. Reduce load, avoid unnecessary driving and call the shop for guidance.
